The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara - Tanzania's northern circuit is the greatest wildlife destination on Earth. Here's how to plan it properly.
What Is the Northern Circuit?
Tanzania's Northern Circuit is the collection of national parks and conservation areas that form the backbone of East African safari tourism. Centred around Arusha, they can be combined in any sequence depending on your time and interests. The core parks are the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Together, they contain some of the highest concentrations of wildlife anywhere on Earth.
The Parks - What Each Offers
Serengeti National Park
Tanzania's largest and most famous park - 14,763 km² of open savannah, woodland and riverine forest. The Serengeti is home to the Great Migration, but it is extraordinary wildlife country in any month of the year. The Seronera valley - the park's central hub - is one of the best places on the continent to see leopard, lying in the branches of sausage trees along the river channels. Lion are everywhere. The northern Serengeti (Lobo, Kogatende) sees fewer vehicles and exceptional predator activity.
Minimum recommended nights: 3
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera - 260 km² of enclosed savannah, forest and lake supporting approximately 25,000 animals. It's one of the only places in Africa where you can reliably see all of the Big Five in a single day. The black rhino population, though small, is one of the most stable in East Africa. The crater floor is spectacular - but it is also the most visited destination on the circuit, so expect other vehicles.
The broader Ngorongoro Conservation Area also encompasses the Oldupai Gorge (site of some of the most important early human fossil discoveries in history) and the vast Ndutu plains - the calving grounds of the Great Migration in January - February.
Minimum recommended nights: 1 (ideally 2)
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is consistently underrated and increasingly appreciated by experienced safari-goers. During the dry season (June - October), the Tarangire River becomes a magnet for wildlife as surrounding water sources dry up - producing some of the highest elephant densities in Africa. Massive ancient baobabs provide a distinctive landscape. The park is significantly less crowded than Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
Minimum recommended nights: 1 - 2
Lake Manyara National Park
A compact but diverse park best done as a half or full day en route between Arusha and Ngorongoro. Famous for its tree-climbing lions (unique in Africa), huge flocks of flamingoes on the alkaline lake, and exceptional birding (400+ species). Its ground-water forest is one of the finest in East Africa.
Recommended: full day game drive
How Many Days Do You Need?
Minimum circuit: 5 days (Manyara day, 1 night Ngorongoro, 3 nights Serengeti). This is workable but rushed - you'll spend a lot of time in vehicles between parks.
Recommended circuit: 8 - 10 days. This allows 3 nights in Serengeti, 2 in Ngorongoro and 2 in Tarangire, with Manyara either as a half-day stop or a night.
Ideal circuit: 12+ days. Adds Ruaha or Selous in the south, or time in Ndutu for the calving season.
Accommodation on the Northern Circuit
The range is extraordinary - from permanent luxury tented camps with private pools to mobile camps that move seasonally to follow the migration, to standard lodges with all amenities. Generally: the further from the park gates, the more exclusive and expensive. Budget-conscious travellers can find excellent value in camps just outside park boundaries.
Book accommodation 3 - 6 months ahead for peak season (July - October). For the calving season at Ndutu (January - February), booking a year ahead is increasingly common.
Combining the Safari with Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar
The Northern Circuit combines naturally with both Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar. The classic itinerary: fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport → climb Kilimanjaro (7 - 8 days) → safari on the Northern Circuit (5 - 8 days) → fly to Zanzibar for beach recovery (4 - 5 days) → fly home. Three completely different East African experiences in one trip. It's the combination we recommend most often.
