Ol Doinyo Lengai 2 Days
Important Safety Information
- This is an expert-level climb. Do not attempt without prior high-altitude trekking experience.
- Steep volcanic ash is highly abrasive - long trousers and covered arms are essential.
- Active lava fields at the summit are approached only under strict guide supervision.
- The descent is harder than the ascent. Trekking poles are not optional.
- Minimum age: 16. Guests with heart conditions or severe acrophobia should not attempt.
Ol Doinyo Lengai - "Mountain of God" in Maa, the Maasai language - is one of the most extraordinary and demanding climbs in Africa. Rising steeply from the shores of Lake Natron in the Great Rift Valley, it is the world's only active natrocarbonatite volcano, erupting a unique black lava that turns white on contact with air and moisture.
The ascent is done at night - always. The slope is so steep (up to 65°) and the terrain so loose and abrasive that climbing in the heat of day is genuinely dangerous. You leave camp between midnight and 1am with a headlamp, following loose volcanic ash and solidified lava ridges that crumble underfoot, straight up the mountain's unrelenting flank.
At the summit, the active crater steams with black carbonatite lava that flows silently in the dark. At sunrise, the view opens to reveal Lake Natron - one of the world's most alkaline lakes, pink with millions of lesser flamingoes - surrounded by the raw, ancient geology of the East African Rift.
This is not a hike. It is one of Africa's most demanding scrambles, reserved for those with strong fitness, a head for heights and a tolerance for genuine discomfort. It is also one of the most unforgettable experiences the continent offers.
