Africa's Fifth Highest Peak
Mount Meru
4,566m
A stunning ascent through wildlife-rich Arusha National Park to a dramatic volcanic crater. The perfect Kilimanjaro warm-up - and a great adventure in its own right.
Africa's Most Underrated Summit
Mount Meru sits inside Arusha National Park, just 70km west of Kilimanjaro - close enough that on a clear summit morning, Africa's highest peak fills the entire eastern horizon from Meru's crater rim.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, Meru requires an armed park ranger for the entire ascent - because you're walking through active wildlife habitat. Giraffes, colobus monkeys, buffalo and elephant are regularly encountered in the lower forest. The mountain itself is a stratovolcano with a dramatic horseshoe-shaped crater, and the final ridge to Socialist Peak is one of the most exposed and technical walks in East Africa.
Many serious Kilimanjaro climbers use Meru as a high-altitude warm-up, arriving at Kili with better acclimatization and a significantly higher summit success rate as a result.

3 Day vs 4 Day - Which is Right for You?
ChallengingMount Meru 3 Days
Three days on one of Africa's most dramatic mountains. A night at Miriakamba Hut and a night at Saddle Hut before the pre-dawn summit push along the exposed crater rim.
RecommendedModerateMount Meru 4 Days
The best way to climb Mount Meru. An extra day at Miriakamba allows for a proper game walk, superior acclimatization and a 94% summit success rate - the highest of any Meru route.
Wildlife on the Trail
Giraffe, colobus monkey, buffalo and elephant in the lower forest zones. Unlike any other mountain in East Africa.
Active Crater
Meru's dramatic horseshoe crater and knife-edge summit ridge are unlike anything else in African trekking.
Kilimanjaro Views
On a clear morning, the entire eastern horizon from Meru's summit is filled with Kilimanjaro above the clouds.
Acclimatization
Reaching 4,566m before Kilimanjaro significantly improves your body's altitude adaptation and summit success rate.
