Mount Meru 3 Days
Mount Meru stands 4,566 metres above sea level - Africa's fifth-highest peak and one of its most dramatically beautiful. Rising from the floor of Arusha National Park, it offers an ascent through dense montane forest alive with colobus monkeys, giraffes and buffalo, before the trail narrows to a knife-edge ridge with sheer drops on both sides.
The three-day route spends one night at Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) and one night at Saddle Hut (3,570m), giving your body two altitude steps before the pre-dawn summit push along the exposed crater rim to Socialist Peak. It's a well-paced route that suits strong hikers with some prior trekking experience.
The reward: a 360-degree panorama with Kilimanjaro - Africa's highest mountain - floating above the clouds to the east at sunrise. Meru is often used as a warm-up before Kilimanjaro, arriving at the higher mountain with better acclimatization and a noticeably higher summit success rate.
