A Chagga coffee farm, an 80-metre jungle waterfall, and a traditional family lunch. Materuni is the most rewarding day trip from Moshi - here's exactly what to expect.

Why Materuni Is Different From Other Day Trips

Most waterfall day trips in Tanzania are variations on the same formula: drive to a viewpoint, look at a waterfall, drive back. Materuni is fundamentally different because it weaves together three genuinely distinct experiences - a coffee farm tour, a jungle hike and an immersion into Chagga culture - in a way that feels organic rather than staged.

The Materuni village has been growing coffee on Kilimanjaro's southern slopes for generations. The coffee tour isn't a demonstration put on for tourists - it's a working farm, and the processing, drying and roasting you witness is how the family actually produces coffee. That authenticity is what makes the tour memorable.

What Happens on the Tour

Morning: The Coffee Farm

After the 30-minute drive from Moshi, you meet your local Chagga guide at the village. The coffee tour begins in the shamba - the cultivated land surrounding the family's homestead. Depending on the season, you'll either pick ripe red coffee cherries from the bushes or examine recently harvested beans at different stages of processing.

The guide explains the complete journey from cherry to cup: wet processing (pulping the cherry to reveal the bean), fermentation, washing, sun-drying on raised beds, hulling, sorting by density, roasting over an open fire in a cast-iron pan, grinding by hand and brewing. You taste the coffee at the end, standing where it grew. It's one of the best cups of coffee you'll ever drink.

Mid-Morning: The Hike to the Waterfall

The trail to Materuni Waterfall takes approximately 1.5 hours each way. It descends from the village through banana plantations and dense tropical jungle, crossing several small streams on stepping stones. The path is narrow, can be slippery after rain, and requires reasonable fitness - it's not a flat walk. The final approach to the waterfall is steep.

Materuni Waterfall drops 80 metres into a natural plunge pool. At high water (after the rains), the falls are thunderous - the spray is visible from 200 metres away. At low water (July - August), they're more elegant. You can swim in the pool at the base. The water is cold, clear and genuinely refreshing.

Afternoon: Lunch and Return

After swimming and relaxing at the waterfall, the guide leads the return hike back up to the village - slightly harder on the legs than the descent. Lunch is served family-style in the homestead: ugali (maize porridge), fresh vegetable stew, avocado, banana and fresh juice. The quality is excellent and the setting - eating with the family in their courtyard - is one of the highlights of the day.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes or trail runners (not sandals)
  • Swimwear and a small towel - don't skip the waterfall swim
  • Light rain jacket - the jungle is humid and it rains regularly
  • Camera - the waterfall and coffee farm are both highly photogenic
  • Small amount of cash if you want to buy whole bean coffee to take home (excellent quality and very good value)

When to Go

Materuni is good in any month. The waterfall is most spectacular in March - April (long rains) and November (short rains), when water volume is highest. June - September brings lower water volume but drier trails and clearer skies. The coffee harvest runs September - December, so if you visit during harvest season, you'll pick cherries yourself.

Booking

Materuni is one of the most popular day trips from Moshi - book at least 48 hours in advance in peak season. The trip includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Moshi, the guide, all village and farm fees, and the traditional lunch. Bring extra for coffee purchases and a tip for your guide.
