Ol Doinyo Lengai Night Hike
Ol Doinyo Lengai - "Mountain of God" in Maa, the Maasai language - is one of the most extraordinary and demanding climbs in Africa. Rising steeply from the shores of Lake Natron in the Great Rift Valley, it is the world's only active natrocarbonatite volcano, erupting a unique black lava that turns white on contact with air.
The ascent is done at night - always. The slope is so steep (up to 65°) and the terrain so loose and abrasive that climbing in the heat of day is genuinely dangerous. You leave Lake Natron camp between midnight and 1am, following loose volcanic ash and solidified lava ridges straight up the mountain's unrelenting flank.
At the summit, active carbonatite lava flows silently in the dark. At sunrise, the view opens to reveal Lake Natron - pink with millions of flamingoes - surrounded by the raw geology of the East African Rift. This is not a hike. It is one of Africa's most demanding and most unforgettable experiences.
