Travel Insurance for Tanzania
Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Tanzania safari or Zanzibar - travel insurance is not optional. Here's exactly what you need, what to look out for, and which providers our guests trust most.
Mandatory for all Kilimanjaro & Mount Meru bookings. Mashuba Tours requires proof of valid travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation before your trek begins. We reserve the right to refuse a climb without evidence of adequate cover.
What Your Policy Must Cover
High-Altitude Trekking
Essential for Kilimanjaro and Meru climbers. Your policy must explicitly cover trekking above 4,000m (ideally to 6,000m for Kili). Many standard travel policies exclude high altitude - always check.
- Covers trekking to 5,895m (Kilimanjaro Uhuru Peak)
- Covers trekking to 4,566m (Mount Meru)
- Includes mountain rescue and evacuation
- Does not exclude altitude sickness as a pre-existing condition
Emergency Medical & Evacuation
Medical evacuation from Kilimanjaro via helicopter or stretcher can cost $5,000 - $20,000 USD. Hospitalization in Arusha or Nairobi for serious altitude illness can exceed $10,000. This coverage is non-negotiable.
- Minimum $100,000 USD emergency medical coverage
- Helicopter evacuation from remote areas
- Medical repatriation to your home country
- 24/7 emergency assistance hotline
Trip Cancellation & Curtailment
Covers your non-refundable costs if you must cancel before departure or cut your trip short due to illness, injury, family emergency or unforeseen events. Important given Tanzania's strict cancellation policy.
- Covers pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs
- Cancellation due to illness or injury
- Curtailment if you must return home early
- Includes 'cancel for any reason' (optional upgrade)
Baggage & Personal Effects
Covers loss, theft or damage to your belongings including trekking gear, cameras and electronics. Safari and trekking equipment is expensive - check the per-item limit on your policy.
- Minimum $2,000 total baggage coverage
- Per-item limit of at least $500 (for camera/electronics)
- Covers trekking and outdoor equipment
- Delayed baggage coverage (airlines lose bags)
Activity & Adventure Sports
Many standard policies exclude 'adventure sports'. Trekking, safari game drives and water activities in Zanzibar may fall under this exclusion. Check specifically that Tanzania activities are covered.
- Trekking and mountaineering explicitly included
- Safari game drives (rough terrain, open vehicles)
- Snorkeling and diving (for Zanzibar add-ons)
- No blanket 'adventure sports exclusion'
24/7 Emergency Assistance
Your insurer must have a 24/7 emergency line that can coordinate evacuation, hospital admission and emergency cash transfers from Tanzania. Remote areas have limited connectivity - your insurer needs experience here.
- 24/7 emergency helpline (not just office hours)
- Experience coordinating African evacuations
- Can direct-pay hospitals (not just reimburse)
- Covers communication costs in emergency

Before You Book - Insurance Checklist
Common Questions
Is travel insurance mandatory for climbing Kilimanjaro?+
TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) does not legally require proof of insurance to enter, but Mashuba Tours requires it for all Kilimanjaro and Meru climbers as a condition of booking. If you are evacuated and uninsured, you are personally liable for all costs - which can easily exceed $15,000 USD.
What happens if I get altitude sickness on Kilimanjaro?+
If your guide determines descent is necessary for your safety, we arrange evacuation immediately - by stretcher, helicopter or vehicle depending on severity and location. Our guides carry emergency oxygen. Your insurance must cover the evacuation costs and any subsequent hospital treatment.
Does standard travel insurance cover Kilimanjaro?+
Usually not without a specific high-altitude or adventure sports add-on. The key phrase to look for is explicit coverage 'above 4,000m' or 'mountaineering/trekking'. Always read the exclusions section carefully and confirm in writing with your insurer before departure.
What's the minimum coverage I should have?+
We recommend: $100,000+ emergency medical, $50,000+ evacuation, $5,000+ trip cancellation, $2,000+ baggage. Ensure your policy explicitly covers trekking at altitude and Tanzania specifically.
Can I buy insurance after arriving in Tanzania?+
Some insurers allow this, but it's strongly discouraged. Trip cancellation coverage only applies if bought before departure. Buy your policy at the same time as your flights - or as early as possible.
Do I need insurance for a Tanzania safari only (no trekking)?+
Yes. Safari game drives in open vehicles across rough terrain carry their own risks, and emergency medical evacuation from the Serengeti to Nairobi or Arusha is expensive. Standard travel insurance (without high-altitude cover) is usually sufficient for safari-only trips.
Is Zanzibar covered by standard travel insurance?+
Generally yes - beach holidays and standard activities (snorkeling, cycling, Stone Town walks) are covered by most standard policies. If you're planning PADI diving at Mnemba Atoll, ensure your policy includes scuba diving.
